Comfort Hearts

$10
Through the efforts of Sandy Maggio Monahan and Carol Ann Cole, The Comfort Heart Initiative is now available in the United States. The Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester will keep 60% of the proceeds of each $10 heart here to fund local breast cancer research. Here's a word from Carol Ann Cole:

How It Began
"In January of 1992, my mother and I were both diagnosed with breast cancer. I survived, my mother did not. Around this time I started lending support and understanding to others based on my own experience. On a visit home to Nova Scotia, I purchased several 'Worry Hearts,' produced by Oceanart Pewter, in Prospect Bay. Holding these hearts during stressful times became a soothing experience for all of us."

How It Grew
"The Comfort Heart Initiative, dedicated to the memory of Mary Cole, has grown from that small beginning. May Ocean and and her sister Linda Power, herself a breast cancer survivor, offered Oceanart Pewter's wholehearted support to produce a special "Comfort Heart" to raise money for cancer research. We then approached the Canadian Cancer Society with our idea. It was met with equal enthusiasm and support. More than $1 million dollars was raised through the sale of hearts."

"Comfort Hearts are one small way to join in the struggle against breast cancer. It is our wish that each Comfort Heart will widen the circle of mutual support and bring moments of comfortand hope to yourself, your family, and your friends. Join the Holders of the Heart, and help us raise funds for breast cancer research."

Scarf Initiative
The Breast Cancer Coalition has a wonderful assortment of scarves from eyelash to wool, triangle or wrap around.

Money from the sale of scarves will be directed 100% towards breast cancer research. We are very proud to announce that our organization awarded our first $25,000.00 grant in January 2003, a second of $35,000.00 in 2004 and will be awarding $40,000.00 in February 2005. We will continue awarding research grants for as long as necessary to fight this disease. The Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester’s mission is to make eradication of breast cancer a priority through education and advocacy, to empower women and men to participate fully in decisions relating to breast cancer, and to promote and focus research into the causes, prevention, treatment and cure of breast cancer.
